Acroyoga at School

Acroyoga at School

Sometimes things just work in synchronicity. My students had been learning about well-being and many different types of fitness, and a friend of mine asked if a visiting acroyoga teacher could teach at my school. I was already booked to attend his workshop the next day, so wanted to see if he would be good at not only teaching adults, but also kids. Olí, Oliver Chamorro Moreno, was amazing! I knew my students would love him. I got the okay from my boss for Olí to come be a guest teacher, and it was a go.

We started by introducing ourselves with a movement that our classmates needed to repeat.

A sweet time at the closing circle was hearing the students describe how acroyoga uses many different ways of well-being. They realized it was not only physical, but a lot about trust, listening, and making connection.

2013 was a busy, fun-filled year. So many things were happening all the time that I didn’t blog very much at all. Here is a photo overview highlighting some memorable moments of 2013. It’s really a summary of what could have been about 20 blog posts organized chronologically for the year. Enjoy!

This is how cashew nuts grow. It's just the part on the end of a big fruit. They need to be harvested individually, the nut is then cut from the fruit, shelled, and dried. Quite a process. It explains why they're expensive.

Acroyoga at the Park

Acroyoga at the Park

Suan Buak Hat is the only park in Chiang Mai Old CIty. If you head there on a Sunday afternoon, you might find a gathering of acroyogis basing and flying. It was set up by Wild Rose as an acroyoga play group, no teacher, just fun. Most of those who join are expats, travelers, people here studying Thai massage, and every once in a while a Thai yogi.

I decided to go play in the park after already doing a 3-hour Anusara Inspired class. Upon arriving I ran into Alok and Anjuli, the couple who had spent a week living with me at my house. Alok is a yoga teacher in the Bay Area and so he was an excellent base and luckily Anjuli snapped some photos for me. Time to fly!

Alok, as the base, guided me on what to do.

It takes strength, flexibility, balance, and trust.

Smiling and waving to Anjuli. This is fun!

I love flying!

Anjuli hooping

Alok handstanding

Looking for balance while upside down with my new base. Not quite there yet.

Being upside down is exhilarating!

Just hanging and being stretched feels so good!

This reminds me of a game we played as kids called, 'light as a feather, stiff as a board'

I am being spun around by my strong and coordinated base.

Thank you for such a fun afternoon acroyogis! I will join you again!

Acroyoga – Flying in Chiang Mai

Acroyoga – Flying in Chiang Mai

One of the many things I love about Chiang Mai is the amount of yoga there is. Excellent yoga teachers from all over the world often stop here on their route around the globe. Over the weekend I attended an AcroYoga workshop. AcroYoga is a cross between acrobatics and yoga. The person on the ground is the base, there is usually a person spotting, and the person in the air is the flyer. As is probably evident from these pictures,   flying is my favorite.

Preparing to fly...

The first day of the workshop was acrobatic style flying. Unfortunately, I do not have many pictures from this day as everyone in the room was either a base, spotter, or flyer. Since AcroYoga tends to draw some attention, these pictures were taken by a random person looking in.

I'm flying! Leigh as base, Colin as spotter

I love being upside down

It takes balance, and coordination with the base, and trust.

...and the way back down

The next day was more the therapeutic style of AcroYoga

Preparing to base for Nina with Babs as the spotter

stretching Nina

...and stretching some more

Therapeutic AcroYoga is quite similar to Thai massage, but all of your weight is suspended. It feels so good.

Then, during break it was time for playing in the pool.

Boris preparing me for flight...

...getting there...

Flight!

Sometimes coming down is graceful...

...and sometimes it isn't

Mostly, AcroYoga is tons of fun.
